US Corn Increased: High Rainfall, Improved Soil Moisture & Favourable Temperatures
The U.S. corn production estimates for the 2025/26 season have been revised upward compared to the previous estimate by Octopusbot, supported by higher-than-forecast precipitation and near-median temperatures in June 2025. Increases in the West North Central region led the net gain, offsetting reductions in the Midwest. The largest gains were recorded in South Dakota and Kansas, while losses were observed in Illinois and Minnesota. Soil moisture levels improved, though extreme deficits persist in parts of Iowa and the Dakotas. Precipitation in July is forecast to show mixed regional variability, followed by below median rainfall through August to October.
Key Drivers Impacting Corn Production
The increase in USA’s corn production estimates is driven by these significant factors:
- Soil Moisture: Soil moisture improved in June 2025 from rank 18 to rank 12 of the last 24 years. However, extreme deficits persist in Iowa and the Dakotas.
- Precipitation: June 2025 recorded above-median rainfall at 133% of the median across major corn-growing regions.
- Temperature: Near-median temperatures were recorded in June 2025 across US corn-growing regions.
Seasonal Outlook: Mixed Rainfall Pattern Across Key Regions
Precipitation in July is forecast to vary across regions, with above-median rainfall in the West North Central and Northeast, near-median levels in the South, and below-median levels in the Midwest and West.
From August to October, rainfall is forecast to be below the median at 95% of median rainfall.
Impact on Corn Yields
Corn yields for the 2025/26 season are forecasted to increase compared to last year. Yields increased in the South, West, Northeast, and West North Central regions, but declined in the Midwest.
The latest USDA crop condition score for corn ranks 9th best out of the past 24 years, above both the 2024 season and the five-year average. Octopusbot’s corn production estimates are lower than the latest USDA estimates.
Octopusbot’s Forecast Accuracy
In a season marked by shifting weather patterns and regional variability, Octopusbot provides accurate AI forecasts needed to make smarter, data-driven decisions, mitigate risks with confidence, and maximize profits with accuracy.
In April 2022, Octopusbot predicted that the season’s production would trend lower, 9 months ahead of the USDA’s prediction with a difference of only 1.8% on the final estimate.
